Best ChatGPT Alternatives: The Private Companies Behind Them, Counted
Twelve companies carry the whole alternatives shelf
Ask for the best ChatGPT alternatives and the same names recur: Claude, Perplexity, Mistral, a coding assistant, a voice tool. Behind them sits a countable set. The Tickerless board tracks exactly 12 private AI companies, with 65 reported valuation points and 25 reported revenue points between them, and every household-name alternative that is not made by a public giant comes from one of these 12. Counted by role, the board splits into general assistants (Anthropic, Mistral, Cohere), research (Perplexity), coding (Anysphere, maker of Cursor), voice (ElevenLabs), data and infrastructure (Databricks, Scale AI), legal (Harvey), embodied AI (Figure AI) and one more frontier lab (xAI). OpenAI, at $840 billion, is the incumbent they all chase.
The board, counted
By latest reported mark: Anthropic $965 billion (May 2026), xAI $230 billion (January 2026), Databricks $190 billion (August 2026), Figure AI $39 billion, Perplexity $30 billion (a round reported in talks), Anysphere and Scale AI $29 billion each, Mistral $24 billion, Harvey $16 billion, ElevenLabs $11 billion and Cohere $7 billion. Reported revenue is recorded for nine of the twelve: OpenAI's $20 billion annualized leads, then Anthropic at $16.8 billion, Databricks at $7 billion, Anysphere at $2 billion, and a long tail under $600 million (ElevenLabs $500 million, Mistral $400 million, Cohere $240 million, Perplexity $200 million, Harvey $100 million). Three companies, xAI, Figure AI and Scale AI, carry no revenue point on the board at all.
How to choose, by what the numbers can actually say
Two honest ways to read the board. For staying power, follow revenue: the two assistants with eight-figure run rates are the two biggest companies here, and the sub-$600 million tail is where alternatives are most likely to be acquired, repriced or folded. For momentum, follow the marks: Databricks and Mistral both printed fresh 2026 rounds, while Cohere's mark dates to September 2025. What the board cannot tell you is which chatbot writes better; it prices the makers, and lets the products speak for themselves.
